The Big Freeze and the Hope for a Cure to MND

In London, UK, tens of thousands lined the streets to celebrate The Queen’s Birthday, traditionally marked by the Trooping of the Colour Parade. Meanwhile in Melbourne, Australia, tens of thousands gathered at the MCG to celebrate by attending the Big Clash AFL game. However this year took on a different flavour, with the Big Freeze 2 at the G.

Celebrities including Eddie McGuire, Kevin Sheedy, Samantha Armytage, Matthew Richardson, Matthew Lloyd, David Koch, Jonathan Brown, Anthony Lehmann, Cameron Ling, Gerard Whateley and Dave Hughes took an icy plunge in front of a record crowd at the MCG to raise funds to support finding a cure for Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

The icy challenge is the conception of former AFL player and coach Neale Daniher AM, diagnosed with MND in 2013. Driven by his leadership and encouragement, the Big Freeze is now becoming synonymous with the long weekend celebrations, raising over 2.9 million dollars this year to support research and discover a cure.

MND is an insidious disease that typically means a terminal diagnosis for its sufferers. Currently there is no cure and few treatment options.

A few days before the first Big Freeze at the G last year, this documentary was produced to explore the disease holistically and what is being done to support sufferers and their families. During interviews, Michael Lynch gains deep insights into the views of medical professionals and scientists who dedicate their lives to researching this disease. Their hope is to improve treatments and one day realise a cure.

Michael also had the privileged opportunity to speak honestly with Lisa Morgan, wife of actor Richard Morgan, and Neale Daniher AM about their confronting experiences with MND.
